21 Days of Hygge: Dancing with Winter 3

"To dance is to reach for a word that doesn't exist,
To sing the heartsong of a thousand generations,
To feel the meaning of a moment in time."

Aren't the little ballerinas adorable? Ballet, tap dancing, jazz ~ there are lots of different hygge ways to dance your way through winter.

I took dance lessons, starting at about 6 or 7 years old, and kept going all the way through high school. I loved it so much that I took several years of dance lessons as an adult, too.

My favorite is jazz dance and I would love to take lessons again someday!

Did you ever take lessons? And do you still love to dance, if you did?

During this 21 days of hygge extravaganza, I have encouraged you to stop what you're doing and dance for a few minutes as a way of dancing with winter. I offer videos here for inspiration, but what I want most is that you dance, even if your favorite is something else, entirely.

I think of dancing as a fun way to exercise and a hygge winter strategy because the best choice of exercise is the one you keep doing. So if it feels fun to do, maybe you'll keep dancing all the way 'til the end of winter. :)

Do you remember dances coming out when you were in school, and then everyone would try to learn them? I remember the hustle, the freak, the rock, the charlie brown and several others.

Was there one that was your favorite? Or one that was hard to learn?

I remember having a hard time with the rock, believe it or not. It seems so easy now, but I just couldn't figure it out, and had to get my friend, Jacci, to help me. She put on a song called "Shake Your Groove Thing" (remember that one?) and I mimicked her until I got it.

I think it eventually became one of the most fun ones I learned to do! What was your most fun dance?

Well today, I want to offer a pop culture dance that I suspect has made the rounds at every school. In fact, I think of its basic steps as the kind you can do with any song even if you don't think of yourself as a good dancer.

When people tell me they can't dance, this is what I teach them to do.

In it's latest incarnation, it's called The Carlton, named for the Carlton Banks character on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Here's another version of this dance ...

You know you want to get out of your seat and do it, too! :)

See you next time!

Love, Jeanine

I took ballroom dancing at an early age (replete with white gloves!)for a few years, followed by a refresher before my bar mitzva.
Now, if I could find a place to dance every week...

Roy, that is so cool! I hope you find one. My son took ballroom dance lessons for several years with a homeschool group we belonged to in the early days of homeschooling. He loved it for a long while, and then, he didn't. ;)

I took dance lessons when I was younger - real young. I think it was more running around on the big floor than real dancing.

Prior to getting married, we took dance lessons for the First Dance.

Other than that, I let my drinking help me with my dancing! LOL.

Paul, I don't think dancing has ever made me a better dancer, but that glass of wine might have made me think so. How cool that you took dance lessons, too, and then again with your wife. I was a debutante a million years ago and had to learn to waltz for that, but I have to admit, it didn't quite take!

That's it! :) It is great fun, both to do the dance, and to hear that song while watching Alfonso Ribeiro dance.

Growing up in India, I learned Indian classical and folk dance forms for many years... and after moving to the states, though I did not take any dance lessons, did participate in fun dance performances (which needed practice sessions) for Bollywood style dances, and a lot of dancercise classes with Zumba, salsa, Bollywood all thrown in there.. so dance for me is totally hygge..

I remember doing ballet when I was a kid. I don't know why I stopped. Just a few years ago, I took tap dance class and stopped when I lost my transportation to the dance school. I have been doing Zumba for the past three and a half years. It's a lot of fun. I've enjoyed doing tap and zumba in the dance recitals. It's all fun to get up on stage and perform. People say that I can't help but dance... and I am old to start dancing... chronologically... but my heart is full of dance.

Oh, I love the way you put that, Alice!! I think my heart is full of dance, too. I did not love ballet but I am grateful for the years I took it because I think it made me more graceful than I would have been otherwise. It's so cool that you are going to take tap dance lessons again. And thanks for reminding me again that I want to try Zumba!

How adorable! I was never into dance but I loved playing the flute and oboe. When in marching band, I played the Glockenspiel and way back in my days, it was a huge, heavy one not like the small hand held ones the bands have now. So no dancing but still love music.

How neat, Martha! I used to envy the band and kinda wish I could be in it. I ended up doing drill team, instead, but I loved hearing the band play. And I love music, too, dancing or not. In fact, I love to sing!
