21 Days of Hygge: Friend Time - Throw an Old-School Music Party

Dancing with Friends

Here's another chance to dance with winter! I encourage you all winter long to give yourself time whenever you can to let your body move to music. And this week, we're going old school.

Think for a moment about the music you grew up with as a child or teen. Is there one favorite song that you remember or is it hard to narrow down? Any songs you liked to dance to when you were younger?

Tell me at least one in the comments. Confession: I can't narrow it down, either!

When you hear those songs, is it hard to resist dancing the way you used to all those years ago? Does it take you right back to when those songs were popular?

What would it be like to get a group of friends together, all about the same age, and ask each one to choose several "favorites" to share? You could hang out all night, enjoying them.

Nothing big, just an old-school music party where everyone brings their favorites and dances or sings along. Have them bring their favorite snacks from way back when, too, and you can just provide the drinks.

Imagine a vibrant, lively evening or night like that happening in the deadest part of your winter experience.

Give yourself time to plan your old-school gathering with friends but make sure it's still winter. While the cold and dreary days are still missing the vibrant warmth of the sun, your dance night might be just what you need.

Variation: An Old-School Family Dance Night

Maybe you could do that sometime today, or tonight, as part of your 21 days of hygge experience.

I remember once, when I was about 9 or 10 years old, my mom ordered an album with 50s music on it.

It was the kind of thing you might see advertised at 3 o'clock in the morning, with snippets of each band performing the song just long enough to make you want to sing or dance to it. When it came, I could not wait to hear it, but my mother said we'd wait until after dinner, and I think that was the fastest meal I never tasted.

Finally, we were finished and my mom pushed back the couches and chairs and coffee table in the living room so we would have room to dance. She put the album on and we danced around the room from the first song to the last.

It was great fun! Would your family dance a bit if you put on a few oldies? Might be worth a try.

Watch this video, below, of family members dancing together. It's so cool. But please don't wait for a formal occasion to dance with your own family. :)

See you next time!

Love, Jeanine

I was born in the 90s but I would say "I wanna dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston is my favorite song. And this song, "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie takes me to a whole new level!

I no longer watch those late night commercials- not because I'm not up or not watching TV then- but the stations I watch don't offer such (putrid) fare. (I actually thought- until just now- that it was another manifestation of the demise of Time-Life.)

I watch them every once in a while, every other year or so, I'd say, just for nostalgia's sake. They play snippets of songs that were my favorites, that I can hear & remember, without having to hunt them down on YouTube or find my own cassettes or CDs.

Cool idea. Two of the songs that I remember are High on a Hill and I Only Have Eyes for You. My boyfriend (now husband) slow danced to those two songs I don't know how many times.

Oh, how neat! Maybe you could find one on YouTube, and as it starts to play, hold out your hand to ask him to dance. :)

I am stuck in the 80's for the most part music wise. I am content with that era and even though l rarely listen to music anymore (I prefer my humming :-) ), every once in a while, it's old country music as in Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash.

Well, you won't hear me telling you that you should "walk the line" or that you're "crazy!" ;) I love some of the 80s music, too! A lot of it was fun.

Oh, I bet it would be fun to take your class!! I need to try it. I keep saying I will, but haven't yet. And now neat to have a dance party in your head!
