7-Step Closet Detox: Do this Before You Create a Capsule Wardrobe

3/12/2021

Now that the weather is warming up, this is an ideal time to do a closet detox. Your mission should you choose to accept it: get rid of the riff raff.

You’re going to be swapping out cold weather clothes for warm weather ones, anyway. And with these steps, you can let go of anything in your closet that no longer serves you.

The 7-Step Closet Detox

Here are the steps for your closet detox...

(1) Grab some empty containers and place them in the room.

(2) Take everything out of your closet.

(3) Examine and try on everything.

(4) Make two piles: the “keep” pile is everything that fits, is not too worn, looks great on you and you know you will wear it. The “let it go” pile are the clothes missing at least one of those criteria.

(5) Put the winter clothes in the keep pile in a container and decide where to store it.

(6) Put the warm weather clothes that are in the keep pile on hangers in the closet. Tip: hang them according to type - shirts, pants, etc.

(7) Decide what to do with everything in the let go pile - don’t keep it in your home, where it will become clutter.

Once you have completed your mission, you will be able to see everything in your closet, and know that whatever you choose to wear will look fabulous on you.

Have you begun to make the switch to warm weather clothes yet?

See you next time!

March is the month I do the “switch” from winter to summer. (The temp is supposed to be 80 degrees today!) I follow your steps which work great for me!

Oh, neat! That's great that you do this already. I tend to go back and forth from long to short sleeves until mid to late April, and then the warmer weather is usually here to stay.

These are all great tips! I have been wanting to do a capsule wardrobe for so long but never started! It's so difficult for me to get rid of clothes even if i haven't worn them in a while, i get quite attached to me, so it's always a struggle! Will try these tips and see how they will work for me when I'll change to warmer clothes, thanks for sharing x

You are so welcome! And I totally feel your pain when it comes to getting rid of things. Sometimes, I don't, and I just move them somewhere else until I know I am truly ready to get rid of them. But I do refuse to keep them in the closet once I realize they aren't right for me.

I don't really have summer and winter wardrobe but my closet is in bad need of an overhaul! That will be my next de-clutter room! I've got a large box ready for the donation box!

Ooh! Thanks for the reminder, Jeanine! I need to do a closet detox. Perhaps, I can tackle it this weekend :) I am starting to wear dresses as we've had straight sunny days where I live. xx

I don't make the switch to warm weather clothing until late May because we have gotten snow in May.

Snow in May? I am wishing we could get some more cold weather. We are getting pollen already. Blech!
