How to Hygge Your Summer Solstice

"Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs some time between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and between December 20 and December 23 each year in the Southern Hemisphere. The summer solstice day has the longest period of daylight, which makes it the longest day of the year." ~ Summer Solstice - Wikipedia
For those of us who experience winter blues or seasonal affective disorder, the summer solstice is like a high holy day, am I right? This year it is on Thursday, the 21st, so here's how to plan to celebrate in hygge style...

(1) Plan to spend several hours in the sun

Picture
Imagine a day at the beach or an hours-long picnic. Or, you could camp out on the balcony or patio with a really good book. Or grab your laptop & head for the back yard.

After several hours in the sun, you are likely to feel as if you have returned to the truth of who you are. That's how powerful an experience it can be.

Sometimes, there's a moment after winter is over when you know that there is nothing left of the winter blues experience. It's truly over! If you haven't experienced it yet this year, the summer solstice might be that day for you.

(2) Write in your journal

After spending several hours soaking up all that sunshine, place yourself in a comfy chair by a sunny window or if it's dark, light several candles & sit near them. Make yourself a delicious cup of tea. Then, grab your journal and fill it with all you know about who you are.

How would you describe yourself?
If you could create the life you wanted, what would it look like?
What do you believe about love & relationships?
What do you believe about the meaning of life?
How do you feel about the loved ones in your life?

Later, when you are starting to experience winter symptoms again, what you've written will be a good reminder of who you really are.

(3) Connect with those you love

If possible, go see them. Hug them and tell them how much you love them & have fun with them. Sure, they have seen you feel better all spring, but filled with sunshine, they may see or feel your energy in a different way. And you may enjoy your time with them differently.

Can't plan a get-together? Call them & spend time listening to the sound of their voices. Hear theirs.

Have a sun-soaked solstice!!

Love, Jeanine

5 Ways to Hygge Summer

"Summer hygge means enjoying the great outdoors. Whether it’s a paddle in the sea, a laid-back picnic with friends or toasting marshmallows on a campfire, this is the time for making memories and enjoying the warmth. The beauty of summer hygge is that all the best activities can be enjoyed for free – a fun day at the seaside; reading a book in the sunshine."  ~ Kayleigh Tanner, owner of HelloHygge.com

Summer Hygge

I'm back. Homeschooling's all done! And just in time to talk hygge in the summer.

How are you? Are you loving summer yet? I will probably post only once a week this month - my birthday is this month and I try to find ways to celebrate all month long. :)

Hope you are diving into summer, too. Here are 5 ways to make summer more hygge...

(1) Light candles that smell like the summer outdoors. So it's a way of bringing nature in, which is always hygge. You also can actually bring in the flowers themselves, and use them to beautify & scent several rooms in the house.

(2) Use soft or textured fabrics that are thinner. but might still be useful if the AC makes you cold.

(3) Head outdoors onto the balcony or patio with a tall class of sweet tea. Maybe that is summer hygge in the south, and you might prefer lemonade, instead.

(4) As Kayleigh suggested in the quote above, while you're out there, read and soak up the sunshine. Take life outside, where it's warm.

(5) Lighten your home's decor & decorate with neutral colors.

Below is a book that can help you do just that & if you click on the links (which are my affiliate links using Amazon), you can own it, too. I love her writing and am likely to own the entire series before too long!

She says, "hygge is always inside you." And I believe her!

"Hygge isn't a seasonal thing, it's an all-year thing because it's not the cold nights in or slurps of hot drinks that are hygge. The nebulous feelings of warmth, safety, welcome, togetherness and belonging that are there in the wintertime, yes, but equally as valid in the depths of summer, when time stands still and lasts much longer."  ~ Jo Kneale, How to Hygge Your Summer
