Winter Soup Recipes: Cold Weather

2/12/2021

Here comes another winter weekend, which means it's time for another comfort recipe.

Do you remember Shoney’s Restaurant? I think it might be a cousin of Bob’s Big Boy (or something similar).

My family and I used to go to their breakfast buffet whenever we had out-of-town relatives visiting, and for me, that would, by itself, make up for all of the irritations I experienced, like having to wait to use the bathroom, being forced to stay at the table and listen to the adults talk, etc.

And later, as an adult, I used to treat myself to lunch or dinner there, when I lived in Virginia. That was before the age of Kindle, so I would bring a book to read, order sweet tea, potato soup and then, apple pie for dessert.

It’s actually how I came to like potato soup. Before then, nothing with soup as a surname was very appealing to me.

And now, loaded baked potato soup is one of the most comforting lunches or dinners I can think of.

But to be honest, I have never tried to make it myself, from scratch. I have given the grocery store soups that pleasure, but I’d really like a good recipe that would be delicious but easy.

Here’s one I might try. Maybe you and your family would like it, too?

Loaded Baked Potato Soup Recipe

After you try it, maybe you will add it to your meal planning rotation this winter. If you want to steep yourself in warmth and comfort as this year begins, a bowl of soup is a great way to do it.

Have a great weekend!

I love Baked Potato Soup and being as cold as it is either that or Chili would be great for dinner. If only the guys in my home could agree on which one instead of us having to make different foods for everyone..

I must be hungry, because right now, I feel like eating both potato soup and chili! With a chunk of bread and butter. :)

I love Loaded Baked Potato Soup! It is about 15 degrees here and that sounds like it will warm us up!

I love potato soup. I even sometimes put gnocchi in it. Yum. You now have me wanting soup for lunch especially since it's in the single digits right now, lol. Thanks for sharing.

So, Shoney's started out as a Big Boy (along with Frisch', Bob's, Elias, and few others). Marriott sold them to Elias and about a decade later the chain folded and the name was revived by a new bunch. Shoney's pulled out right about the time Marriott took them over.
Oh, yeah- I never touch potatoes.

That's a lot of different owners!! I forgot about you and potatoes. So what would you have in your bowl of cozy this weekend?

I grew up in Michigan where there were Big Boy restaurants too! We had breakfast there every Saturday with my dad. I believe there still is a Big Boy open in my hometown of St. Joseph, MI. It's freezing here too in Texas, so I'm thinking of something warm like this for dinner!

I think I was in VA the first time I ate at a Big Boy restaurant, but I have lots of good memories from Shoney's. And I predict a soup dinner for myself within the week, if not the weekend. Hope you enjoy yours!

Yes! It is even better when you add bacon. Thanks for mentioning it. I have fixed the link, and that recipe looks good. :)

The link was broken, but I did find the recipe online. It looks like wonderful comfort food! And I do love anything that's called "soup."

Interestingly, my wife has been fancying soup over the last few weeks (perhaps, because she's pregnant). I've never heard of loaded baked potato soup, but I'm sure she'd be open to trying it.
