Two of the hallmark symptoms of winter blues, seasonal depression and seasonal affective disorder are an increased appetite & a craving for carbohydrates. It happens most likely, they say, because not getting enough sunlight leads to not having enough serotonin.
Enter carbs. And often, weight gain.
And of course, we don't want that for ourselves this winter. But what do we do about food & cravings?
For me, the most important thing is to completely remove blame and/or shame. And resist the urge to navel-gaze. You will find something if you look. We probably all have wounds that haven't healed.
But this is about winter. And what you deserve is complete acceptance, compassion and kindness. And then, a meal plan.
Don't change everything without input from a healthcare provider you trust, but you might want to load your meal plan with foods that will make you feel better. That's actually a good way to avoid overeating.
I suggest adding something to every meal that will help boost serotonin and having a big cup of your favorite tea in between. Did you know that caffeine boosts serotonin?

It recommends that you "follow serotonin diet principles while avoiding wheat and refined carbohydrates by emphasizing brain-healthy carbohydrates like potatoes, root vegetables, fruit, and grains like rice and oatmeal."
